THE South African Hockey Association appointed a new national women's coach today and also named the SA women's team for a 12-Test trip to China at the end of the month.

Giles Bonnet, an FIH Grade 1 coach, with 25 years experience in International Hockey, has been named the SA women's team head coach. He takes over from Jenny King.

Bonnet spent 10 years as a player for South Africa and 15 years as coach. In addition to this International experience - in South Africa, Belgium, Holland and China, he has also coached both men and woman’s top club teams in the premier league in Holland for 7 years and been the Manager of the Amsterdam Hockey Academy for 3 years.

Bonnet, Coached the Belgium Men’s team 2001-2007, improving their world ranking and having worked extensively with the Belgium Olympic Committee to professionalize the sport in Belgium and took the team from amateur to semi-professional status.

Bonnet, Coached the Amsterdam Woman’s team 2001-2006, improving their ranking from 6th in the league to being regular silver medallists. Having worked extensively on the improvement of individual players to prepare 6 players for the Dutch team.

Bonnet, was the Assistant Coach of the Chinese men’s team for 12 months, participating in the Beijing Olympics 2008. In this period he also worked with the silver medal Chinese woman’s team before the Beijing Olympics.

It is believed that Bonnet with the wealth of International Experience will be able to take the National team to achieve higher honours in the future. Bonnet will be employed on a project based system due to the financial constraints South African Hockey are currently experiencing.

Bonnet will also be tasked with using a number of “trainers” on the various tours and camps in order to improve the general standard of hockey within the regions of South Africa.

Bonnet's first task is to take the SA team to Beijing, China from May 28 to June 18 for a training camp that will also include 12 Test matches against China.
